This week’s 🌱Green Habits🌱 were focused entirely on ❌not letting resources go to waste 🗑️

🍀The repaired hanger 👩‍🔧 now easily takes the weight of lightweight clothes like shirts 👕

Fixing it with paper tape barely took me 2 minutes ⏱️

It was such a quick fix 👌 to help extend the life of a product that a ton of 🏭resources went into producing

✨Repairing is always more sustainable than replacing or recycling✨

🍀My family doesn’t use plastic bottles anymore as plastic leaches🧪 hormone-disrupting chemicals and microplastics into food and water 🍛

I made citrus Bio Enzyme🍋 using lemon and sweet lime peels in the bottles

They were perfect for this because they had a wide mouth and were air tight as well

💛If you’re new to Bio Enzyme, it’s a multi-purpose liquid made from fruit/veggie peels, jaggery and water (in a ratio of 3:1:10)

After it’s fermented for 1-3 months, you can dilute it and use it as a

Floor cleaner, pesticide, dish washing detergent, surface cleaner and more!

✨repurposing is more sustainable than recycling and replacing✨

And

✨Bio Enzymes make use of kitchen waste (fruit + veggie peels) to make excellent cleaners which also help to purify water✨

🍀The last idea of growing nutritious microgreens from groceries which have pests was actually borrowed from my mom

She does this with all whole dals and grains that are old or have pests 🌾

✨Using pested groceries for growing microgreens ensures that our farmers’ efforts and planet’s many resources don’t go to waste✨

A little peak into some 🌱Green Habits🌱 I practiced this week ✨

🍈We had guests over at 🏠home who brought along some jackfruit (i.e. kathal)

🍈Nobody in my family had tried it before and somehow everyone disliked it.. I absolutely LOVED the fruit 😋

🍈 I loved the taste of the jackfruit seeds just as much as I did the fruit 👌

🍈Consuming the jackfruit seeds is such an easy (and tasty) zero waste hack to reduce food waste. I’m 💯% going to do it again!

💦Having more people at home also meant that more 💧filter water was used

💦Which, in turn, meant that more waste water was released🪣 from the RO filter

💦Even after mopping floors🧹quite some of the RO waste water was left so I used it as flushing water 🚽

🫙I love repurposing glass jars with lost or broken lids into 🍷glasses

🫙The production of glass is extremely ❗️resource-intensive & polluting

🫙Glass is also ❌not recyclable♻️ in many parts of India

🫙So reusing and repurposing glass as much as you can is important!

🌾Lastly, a very little amount of the groceries fell on the table while we were packing them

🌾This always happens and we usually collect it and leave it out for birds

🌾But the birds are not able to eat grains like dals so this time I decided to compost everything that was spilled instead

🌾I try to send as little as possible to landfills

❗️Green Washing❗️needs to be a thing of the past already 😫

🥤🥤Paper cups are one of our planet’s worst enemies because 🥤🥤:

😣 They require cutting down 🌳trees
😣 They are white because they are 🧪chemically bleached
😣 They are single-use. Large amounts of 🏭resources are used just for getting one use out of them
😣 Their plastic lining releases 25000+ microplastics in beverages ☕️
😣 Their plastic lining also pollutes our 🌏planet after the cups are disposed 🗑️

🛍️🛍️Woven bags have long been masquerading as cloth bags but 🛍️🛍️:

😣 They are woven out of polyester
😣 They release synthetic microfibres, which are a type of ❗️microplastic
😣 They pollute 🍃air, 💧water and 🌾land just like polythene bags do

👝👝 Brown paper bags with plastic windows 👝👝:
😣 Have a plastic lining inside of them
😣 Cannot be ❌♻️ recycled because they have a mix of: paper, soft clear plastic, hard zip-lock plastic
😣 Are actually worse than plastic packets as 100% plastic packets are at least recyclable

🏭Companies will keep making these products as long as we keep 🛍️buying them

So say 🙅‍♀️no🙅‍♂️ to them as much as you can!

Just by saving 🥦kitchen water, 🚰RO filter waste water and switching to bucket baths from 🚿showers, we can all easily save at least💧10,000 litres of water every year

🧮Calculation for shower vs bucket bath:

🪣Showers on average use 75% more water than bucket baths
🪣 I always fill up an 18L bucket to 3/4 level for a bath
🪣 Which means I use about 13.5L (18x0.75) water for baths
🪣 13.5x75% = ~23.65
🪣So I save at least 10L everyday by choosing a bucket bath over a shower

💧 Water is a limited resource that we take for granted, and we can see the repercussions of this in 🏙️ cities like Bangalore

✨ Four super simple ways to save 💧water are:

💧 Reducing the number of wash cycles per day in 🧺 your washing machine; which use ❗️60-140 litres of water in a ❗️single wash cycle. Doing so could help you save 💧💧💧3000+ litres of water every month ✨

💧 Grains, seeds and nuts should always be soaked before consuming because they have ❗️anti-nutrients like phytic acid which decrease nutrient absorption and can also cause digestive issues.

This water is very nutritious for 🌱plants and can be saved alongside water used to wash 🍎fruits and 🥕veggies. Doing so will help you save 💧💧💧90+ litres of water every month ✨

💧Saving RO waste water is crucial because it is perfectly clean water that we let go to waste. It can used to 🧹mop floors, 🍽️ wash utensils, 🚽clean bathrooms and so much more.

✨ Sharing knowledge on composting is just as rewarding as the process of composting is!

We conducted a short 🌱Workshop on Composting🌱 for second-third graders at The Shri Ram School, Vasant Vihar, Delhi on National Science Day 🇮🇳🔬

We started with an interactive session 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ on what composting is, why we should do it and this was followed by a quick demonstration

The students were then led to a composting unit, where they added kitchen waste that they had brought from their homes 🍌🥒

Carbon for the process was provided to them in the form of unbleached shredded paper 📜

They were also given an easy-to-follow handout for reference ✅

It was so amazing to see 🤩 how eco-conscious the students were, and how excited they were about the subject of sustainability ♻️

⚠️Glass is sustainable *only if* we use it sustainably because:

✅It actually takes more energy to make glass bottles as compared to plastic bottles

✅ but glass is still considered more sustainable because plastic breaks down into toxic microplastics and leaches harmful chemicals into food and water stored in it. Glass also breaks down back into non-toxic silica

✅ Not to forget the very high amounts of energy🌡️ it takes to melt glass for the purpose of ♻️recycling it

💡As a simple funda, reusing materials is always more sustainable than recycling them

There is so much criticism, lack of understanding and rejection that one faces when they try to do something unconventional in their life.. I have also faced this but my parents’ support is the one thing that has helped me stay strong through it all

When I started out on my zero water journey about 6 years ago, there was definitely a lot of dismissal from them.. but it wasn’t ever exactly a lack of support. It came more from the lack of understanding of the difference that one person could make in the vastness of the climate crisis.

But over the years, my parents saw how I refused to budge and that it wasn’t just a ‘trend’ to me. Whenever I had the chance to live by myself, I went out of my way to live as waste-free as I possibly could.. even if it meant taking a to-and-fro 1 hour bus ride to be able to buy groceries only from zero waste stores in the UK.

My parents made an effort to understand me and today they support me in more ways than I could have ever asked for. They stand by me, offer help without my even asking for it, and tell people stories about my journey at every opportunity possible. How I wish everyone, including my parents, had had the privilege of receiving this undying, endless and unconditional love and support from their parents just like I always have.
